St Thomas' Howrah celebrated fifty years

On Sunday the 2nd of November members of St Thomas' Anglican Church together with their rector the Rev. Alex Kornaczewski, celebrated fifty years in Howrah with a special church service followed by a delicious buffet lunch where that first service was held.

They were celebrating and remembering the first Anglican service held in the suburb of Howrah, as an extension of St Mark's, Bellerive. This service was held at the Sunshine Home by the Rev. Tom Cloudsdale in late 1953. Services continued at that venue before moving first to the A-frame Methodist Church near the Tranmere Shopping Centre, and then later to the Tranmere Progress Hall. Some people will remember setting up on Saturday and packing away and cleaning on Sunday.

Set-square

In l968 the Rev. Ken Ansell was appointed to the Parochial District of Howrah where he gathered enough support to build the present church that was dedicated in 1970. It was named St Thomas', after the patron saint of builders, who carries the ruler and set-square, and stands today on the same site in the Parish of Howrah.

At the lunch, five members of that first service cut the celebration cake - Bob and Melva McKenzie, Edward and Margaret Shaw and Mavis Swan. Among the invited guests were the past rector, the Rev. Ken Ansell and his wife Freda. It was a great opportunity to thank God for His goodness, to reminisce and catch up with old friends.
