Sometime back in the fourth century the bishop of Jerusalem, Cyril, delivered a series of sermons during Lent and Easter designed to give instruction to the Church. Now, for 2004, the six deaneries of the Southern Region of the Diocese of Brisbane have teamed to produce a series of Lenten studies for small groups that follow in that tradition of preparing participants to experience the Easter Event anew.

These studies are called Shaping Community, a timely aim in the fractured and fractious era we find ourselves in. The six studies in this collection draw on the Gospel readings for the Sundays in Lent and feature some common and some more unusual selections of scripture.

Fine resource

Each study features a commentary section to allow participants to enter into the group experience, discussion questions, and reflection questions or activities, along with worship. It should be added that the document includes an excellent section on group leader advice, to enhance a meaningful study experience.

This book is a fine resource for Lent. It is easy to imagine that a group who enjoyed these studies would feel a sense of preparedness to re-experience Holy Week, surely the aim of our Lenten walk.
