Obituary

Ronald Douglas Stancombe, OAM, Deacon

The people of Holy Trinity Church, Launceston and Holy Family Church, Inveresk, and others throughout the local community are in mourning at the passing of Doug Stancombe. After his ordination in 1964 he served as honorary deacon of Launceston South until 1973, when he joined the staff of Holy Trinity Parish. He served also as honorary chaplain of the Peace Haven Village.

Doug endeared himself to the people of the church through his earnest preaching and pastoral care. All rectors and locums with whom he worked at Holy Trinity and Holy Family have spoken of his intense loyalty and caring helpfulness. Only the Sunday before his death he read the Gospel and administered the chalice at a Eucharist.

A Requiem Eucharist was celebrated at Holy Trinity on All Souls Day, 2 November, and there was a large and representative gathering for his funeral service at the C.T. Finney Centre on Tuesday 4 November.

Father Michael Varnish (Rector of Holy Trinity 1996-2002) travelled from Adelaide to lead the service and to commend to God's care his faithful servant 'who was always there for us.' Readings were given by Bishop Phillip Newell and Canon Des Tyson. In the eulogy Archdeacon Emeritus Warwick Letchford spoke of some of Doug's many talents and his steadfast perseverance in service.

After the funeral service Doug's war service and masonic service were commemorated. All present appreciated the opportunity to be with Doug's sons Paul and Allan, and his daughter Margaret to thank God for Doug's life and example.
