The Great Cross of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture in Canberra

Heads of churches gathered to dedicate Great Cross

The Great Cross of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, was dedicated on Saturday 22 November, attended by political and community leaders.

The Centre's Executive Director, Professor James Haire, said: 'The cross is of steel, painted so that it catches the light exquisitely. It's…two pieces of steel rising twenty-five metres into the sky, with two cross bars. It looks directly towards the chapel and, more importantly, towards Parliament House.'

A pool speaks of new life in a parched and barren land and is also a Christian symbol of baptism. Prof. Haire said, 'the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture is an ecumenical venture. It provides a ministry to the Parliament. For example, the service for the opening of Parliament has been held at the centre.

'It is at the interface between Christianity and Australian society - and involved in society's issues, such as reconciliation. It wants to stimulate ecumenical dialogue in this country. It will also stimulate interfaith dialogue.'

Pilgrim

The Great Cross is the last stop on the Centre's 'Pilgrim Walk', which surrounds a protected grassland on the six hectare site. The Pilgrim Walk has symbols of Australian spirituality including:

  • pilgrim poles, with symbols of indigenous spirituality
  • a labyrinth for meditation
  • a Bible garden, with plants mentioned in the Bible
  • an outdoor chapel.

Eventually the Centre will house part of the Charles Sturt University's School of Theology. It will also provide accommodation for researchers and for Christian organisations that serve the community. Longer term plans include a Great Room and a Great Space, that will provide a place for national worship and celebration, with indoor and outdoor seating for five to seven thousand people. The building program is funded through the Federation Fund and generous private and corporate donors.
