Let there be peace on earth

Social Justice Sunday was celebrated in a moving service at St Peter's Anglican Church, Hamilton.

The service was celebrated by members of the church family, who did all the planning, leading, speaking, praying, singing and playing music. The service commenced with the lighting of a peace candle on the altar, and prayers by the children.

The following words are taken from the address given by John Shoobridge.

When we begin to destroy each other in lack of compassion and rejection, in abuse and harassment, and prejudice and hate, in violence and war, we end child-like innocence which is our birthright.

Through the eyes of our children of today, let us remember trust; let us remember hope and dream of human friendship and understanding.

Our worth does not depend on our colour, our race, our custom or our creed. We are all made in God's image, each deeply loved by God. That is finally the source of our human dignity.

We can all take small effective steps to help and welcome strangers. As Christians in love of Christ, may we set the example of our openness and generosity towards our fellow man, and God's power and love for us all is the foundation on which we build our families, our communities and our nation.

The Hamilton Parish is now under the wonderful spiritual leadership of James Collins. Members of the parish are preparing for a commissioning of 'the Team' to be held on Sunday 22 February 2004 at 2.30pm at St Peter's, Hamilton. Everyone is welcome to share in the day with us.
