Extract from the judges comments Islam In our Backyard is a highly readable (indeed exciting) presentation and analysis of Islam. It answers questions about what is going on in the world; makes sense of the Bali bombings; and is exceptionally accessible to ordinary readers, Christian or non-Christian. An imaginative framework grounds the discussion of Islam within the context of Australian life. The author is well versed in the subject of Islam including its political implications. By discussing the major theme of the unity of religion and State in Islam he posits the impossibility of any distinction between faith and politics in that system. He intelligently reflects on how we should respond to Islam's answers to the big questions of its faith. He provides an explanation for the violence inherent in Islam and throws light on the Wahabi sect as the modern expression of and impetus for radical Islam. At the same time he encourages the maintenance of a healthy Christian love and respect for Islamic people. |
