Search Engines - Images

The worldwide web is a wonderful resource and it has many things available for free or for purchase at a minimal cost. Those who do pew bulletins, newsletters and notices are often seeking the perfect picture or artwork to enhance the message. A number of the search engines provide the facility to find and display images associated with particular key words. The software is not as precise as that with text searches, but will generally give usable results with a bit of manual filtering. In fact, it uses a combination of the text of a web page and the name given to the image by the programmer to find 'likely' images.

As with all searches the choice of keywords is important and if you are looking for something specific try to be specific, but because the software is not as precise, some second-guessing can be helpful.

For images for a Christmas letter it is well to remember that our American brothers and sisters also refer to this as the 'Holidays' and so to use this term will yield more results.

One final warning, just because you can source an image does not mean you can use it. Copyright is applicable to images on the net and so it is important to ascertain that you may use it. This may mean emailing the source and asking permission, but for the most part this will be freely given, even if the image is commercially owned. If there is a copyright, you must display it along with the image.
