An instant learning community was created at Church House in August as a group gathered to benefit from Chris Thiele's expertise in Information Technology, particularly the use of Powerpoint in ministry situations from worship services to teaching seminars. PowerPoint could be described as a computerised marriage between the familiar projector and screen (used for picture slideshows), and the overhead projector (used for words as well as pictures). A computer with PowerPoint software can create a series of 'slides' with words, pictures, and special effects, which can then be saved onto disk or CD, and shown on a computer screen, or projected onto a larger screen with a data projector, as a teaching tool or the basis for a service of worship or community gathering such as Carols by Candlelight. UnrulyA range of laptops and desktops, different versions of Powerpoint software, coupled with the mix of computer literacy within the group, added to a lively and often hilarious journey through the making and saving of the individual 'slides' which result in a completed PowerPoint presentation. Despite the somewhat unruly 'class', Chris facilitated an excellent learning opportunity. Everybody took away some new or enhanced skills, as well as three CDs full of resources gathered painstakingly by Chris for the creation of great PowerPoint presentations. |
