Search engines

Search engines are programs/sites that are used to help you find information on the Worldwide Web. They essentially use robot software (called 'spiders'), that find web pages and then read them looking for specific words or phrases and recording their location in cyberspace. To find information, you simply type in one or two keywords and you are presented with a list of sites, which correspond to these keywords.

The problem is that there are many sites (Google claims to searching 3 083 324 652 web pages ) and so you can be presented with lists of hundreds of thousands, which is not useful - particularly if you are looking for something specific. Adding keywords will help reduce the number of options, but the choice of keywords is important and a little cleverness can help.

You need to think of something that is unique to what you are seeking and to put phrases in quotes. For example (Anglican Church Tasmania) yields 8190 pages but ("Anglican Church" Tasmania) yields 5340 pages.

To save typing, I often look for the words of hymns (for funeral leaflets). If you use the first line you get not only the words but all references to the hymn; but if you put in the second line, you only get the words. For example, (For all the Saints) 1 430 000 hits ("For all the Saints") 15 100 hits and ("who from their labors rest") 895 hits.

Remember also that it is worth varying English and American spelling on the keywords. Also read the tips that the search engine provides.
