Bishop Phillip chatting with Mrs Pam Forbes-Strickland and Philip Blake after the Evensong Service

Encouraging visit to Holy Trinity, Launceston

by Philip Blake

Bishop Phillip Newell recently spent seven weeks in the parish of Holy Trinity, Launceston, as a locum while Archdeacon Warwick was interstate.

Phillip and Merle quickly endeared themselves to the congregations of Holy Trinity and Holy Family Churches, with their ministry, lively sense of humour, and pastoral concerns. It was also obvious that the Newells enjoyed their stint in the north of the island and were able to relax as well as minister. All benefited from the arrangement!

Bishop Phillip's last activity was at the service of Choral Evensong on Sunday, 3rd August. In place of a sermon he answered questions submitted by members of the congregation, but previously unseen by him. He was quite at home in this and answered the questions (which included a few curly ones) well.

Afterwards we all enjoyed a time of fellowship and refreshment. In his farewell comments, Bishop Phillip encouraged us to be mindful of each others' needs and to take the opportunity to reach out to others during the interregnum.
