How are the salt containers coming along?
- A group of students from Kingston CCS have regularly
spent their technology lessons at Mission Afloat , making
knot boards and lighthouses out of your salt containers.
They are at present constructing model yachts, 60 cm
long, from foam and wood with metal keels. They sail like
a dream! Arthur Hinsley has worked tirelessly in
fine-tuning the prototype.
- Meanwhile, the manager has been busy. In order to
upgrade his qualifications to a Full Coxswain's
Certificate, he has completed and passed a navigation
course and is awaiting the results of his marine radio
operator's examination. He also led a workshop at the
training camp for leaders of Edmund Rice Camps at
Orana.
- After a recent visit by NPWS and Tasmanian Heritage
Office we received a supportive letter from NPWS that
will help with our jetty application. We are continuing
to liaise with the local citizens' groups to ensure that
all their concerns are heard.
- Meanwhile, a chance meeting with a model boat club
has resulted in an enthusiastic offer by its members to
come down to Mission Afloat to sail their boats in the
bay on Open Day, 6th December.
- The Adult Education supplement includes three Mission
Afloat parent/child options: a model boat-making session
('build it and sail it'), a fishing day ('make your own
gear and go fishing') and a lighthouse-building day.
Check the supplement for details.
- Thank you to Don Hazell for the generous donation of
timber for our jetty, and to Peter Johnston Pty Ltd for
the donation of a fully-equipped but recently
decommissioned life-raft to use as a display. Mr Tony
Norton has donated large steel beams for the jetty.
- Chocolate selling is now in the capable hands of
Maree Lucas and her son, Aaron. If you can sell a box of
twenty bars, give them a call on 6229 8877.
- Peter Harvey and Charlie Lucas are preparing a Giant
Auction for our Open Day on December 6th. Do keep the
date free to come and join in - and grab a bargain!
