Yes, it's time to get those shoe boxes out and start collecting pencils! The Pencil Project was first run in the year 2000. A fantastic response from children in parishes and schools meant that many boxes full of pencils and the like were sent to various schools in Papua New Guinea. Letter of thanks and wonderful drawings arrived some time later, highlighting the fact the the need for resources in these schools is great. The headmaster of the Anglicare Elementary School in Kokopo, Michael Vauta writes, 'I really appreciate the box of colour pencils, pencils and sharpeners and water colours. As you know this is a new school...we still need your support.' Vincentia, an Elementary One student from the Kimbe Anglican Elementary School writes : 'Our school is very small. We have two teachers, thirty nine girls and thirty one boys. Our classroom is made of bush materials. We don't have good desks and blackboards for our teachers. Thank you!' Great needWriting and drawing are a major part of children's learning and development. Having the tools to do so is something we take for granted, isn't it? Our pencil boxes only covered a fraction of the small struggling schools in PNG. Tasmanian Anglican visitors to PNG have confirmed the great need of resources and have asked if the project could be run again. Pencil Project 2003 packs have been sent thoughout the diocese &endash; watch out for them! The project will continue till Christmas and could readily be included in your children's program. Details are included in the pack.
