The Rev. Brian Eccles and Ellen Sweet with the Paschal Candle and candlestick, dedicated to the memory of the Reverend Lyn Plunkett

Something special at New Norfolk

by Ellen Sweet

St Matthew's Church, New Norfolk has dedicated a Paschal candlestick to the late Rev. Lyn Plunkett. The candlestick was crafted by Lyn's brother Greg Reid, a skilled wood turner, from a single piece of blackwood, kept by Greg for something 'special'.

Both the candlestick and candle were presented in church on Easter Day 2003, in remembrance of the life and ministry of the Reverend Lyn Plunkett. Celia Hooker, Lyn's cousin, lead the Service of Light, Greg brought the candle stick into the sanctuary, and Lyn's husband, Gerald, processed the lit Paschal candle through the fellowship and placed it in the candle stick.

Tradition

For many years Lyn was a faithful member of Mothers' Union, who gave the Paschal candle and it is the intention of MU to annually replace the candle as a memorial of the light of Christ and of Lyn's life and ministry in the parish.

Lyn's spirit

Members of Lyn's family were at this very moving service, and this photo was taken on the following Sunday 27 April, when we lit the candle at our first Baptism service after its dedication. Several beautiful children were baptised and it was very special to use the Paschal candle and candlestick in the service.

With several others, Lyn had hoped to begin the Paschal tradition in Easter 2002, so the fellowship believed it fitting to act upon this hope this year. All were amazed by the beauty of the craftsmanship, but somewhat saddened that it came into being as a memorial. However, Lyn's spirit was strongly present at the Easter Day service and her friendship, love and ministry will always be alive in the parish for many years to come.
