On Sunday, l3 July, a celebration communion service was held at St Aidan's Church, Lindisfarne, to commemorate 50 years of Women's Guilds at St Aidan's and St. James', Montagu Bay, in the Parish of Lindisfarne.

We also celebrated Eileen Johnson's 80th birthday and Bishop John presented Eileen of St Aidan's Guild with a Certificate of Appreciation and Life Membership. Joyce Chamberlain of St James' Guild, Montagu Bay, was awarded Life Membership. Both these women were foundation members of the guilds, and were commended for 50 years of devoted service.

Guild members took an active part in the service. Pam Smith, St James' read a report compiled by Peg Phillips on the history of the guild and its many hours of service. Elizabeth Cloudsdale, wife of a former rector, spoke about St Aidan's Guild and her time as rector's wife in the Parish of Clarence, as the district was at that time. Prayers were led by Joyce Jones and Hilda Murfet read the gospel. Bishop John gave the address on 'Service for Christ 'and Bishop John and Eileen Johnson later cut the 50th birthday cake. We then moved to the hall for fellowship, morning tea and lots of chatter. Members and former members of the guilds reminisced.

Remember when?

We served supper for Mission to Seamen on Sunday evenings; sold badges on street corners; catered for garden parties; did morning teas for ABM; organised lots of stalls, fairs, fashion parades, dinners for the Bible Society and other fund raising functions in the parish; church cleaning and flowers. Who could forget our Christmas parties when members entertained us with hilarious performances. And, yes, we still do most of these things today. We may be a little slower, but we get things done. Our thanks to the guilds for 50 years of dedicated service to the Parish.
