Sea Sunday in Burnie

by Will Briggs

On Sunday, 13 July the Parish of Burnie celebrated Sea Sunday with a combined parish service at St George's, Burnie.

The North West Coast has a great attachment to all things maritime and this was a great opportunity to be involved in the local community.

There were representatives from many organisations including the Police Marine Safety Division, the T.S. Emu Naval Cadets and the Naval Association. The Tasmanian Detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band provided their excellent musical skills at the service, having performed at a local hotel the day before. Our own Ian Harvey, as chaplain in the Mission to Seafarers at Burnie, told of the importance of Sea Sunday and the need and opportunity for Christian witness to those who are involved with the sea.

Sea Sunday is observed throughout the world. Archdeacon Eric Burton, Principal Chaplain of the Royal Australian Navy, drew upon the importance of the sea in his sermon - reflecting on how the sea reveals in general terms much about the nature of God, and thus the importance of knowing God in the special sense that we can only find in Jesus Christ.

Sea Sunday was a wonderful opportunity to express creativity - flags, nautical paraphernalia, and even a model of the Tasmanian Achiever Toll container boat, decorated the church - and it was a great time sharing the delicious luncheon after the service. But more importantly the service provided a profound recognition of how God works in so many lives, in this case the lives of those who spend time at sea.

We hope to build upon this recognition in the future and look forward to next year!
