Backups (Part 1)

As the computer becomes more a part of our lives, we should face the possibility that something may go wrong. Major system failure or virus attack can cause us to lose all the information stored on the computer. When we cannot afford to lose something, we should make the effort to ensure that you don't.

The simplest way to do this is to make a copy periodically of the information we do not wish to lose. This is called a backup. It is possible to backup by printing out the information, but if we wish to use it again in a computer, it is more convenient to take an electronic copy. To do this we will need what is described as 'removable media.'

This is something on which the information is written that can be physically removed from the computer, as with a floppy disc drive, a Zip drive or CD burner. To backup, the material that we wish to keep is copied to the removable media and this is then removed and stored in a secure/safe place.

Another alternative is to store the information on another computer either by copying it across a network or in some cases, to email it to another site.
