No, it's not relating to Harry Potter magic but to music at St Paul's Glenorchy. The Ahlborn Hymnus IV is a new organ recently installed in St Paul's church.

It is a compact digital instrument which offers organists all the musical characteristics of classical organs, with an excellent sound quality from 27 stops. It has a particularly efficient internal amplification system.

Dramatic

The organ was 'launched' at a Musical Afternoon on Sunday 1 June with a program of organ, piano, guitar and choral music. David Featherstone, organist of St John's Newtown, played a wide range of well known classical pieces and described the functions and versatility of the organ to a large audience. He remarked on the dramatic improvements that have occurred in digital instruments, making very effective instruments affordable for the smaller church buildings.

Further concerts

Supporting organists were Vivienne Barnes of St Mark's Bellerive, Bill Flassman of St Paul's and Geoff Long of Geoff Long Music. The choristers were well known artists, Netta Livermore, Trenna Squires, and Christian Carson. The guitarist was Scott Swanson.

David's final bracket of pieces included Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by J S Bach, excerpts from Water Music by G F Handel and the Minuet from Berenice by G F Handel.

The concert drew music lovers from the community and from across parishes and denominations. Many expressed an interest in further concerts as a means of coming together.
