Seafarers' Chaplain will be missed

by Jack Tomes

The Senior Chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers in Tasmania, Robert Hill, has resigned his position and will shortly return to England to be nearer his mother, who is in ill health.

After serving three years at Dampier in North Western Australia, Robert accepted the Tasmanian appointment and commenced duties at the Hobart centre on 25 May 1995.

From Stanley in the North West to Port Huon in the South, Robert had great appreciation of the Tasmanian scene, seeking out the needs of the seafarer. An honorary chaplaincy was established at Stanley to care for the crews of a bulk carrier on occasional visits.

Reliable band of volunteers

Robert's ordination as deacon, and subsequently to the priesthood, would no doubt highlight his term of office. As Secretary to the Australian Council close contact was kept with national activities. Following his training he continued to assist in the South Hobart Parish of All Saints.

Robert will be missed from his regular rounds and especially the seasonal wharfside facility which he inaugurated to cater for the crews of visiting cruise ships.

On his return to England, Robert will be doing chaplaincy work in the port of Hull. In the meantime whilst considerations are under way for a replacement, the Hobart Centre will continue to operate with its small reliable band of volunteers.
