A Union of Mothers

by Heather Turner

On Tuesday 18 March 2003 nearly seventy people gathered in Campbell Town for our combined Commissioning, Diocesan Council and Lady Day Service. Our Vicar General Robert Legg was there on behalf of Bishop John.

In his address the Vicar General referred us as a 'Union of Mothers'; yes, we are a Union of Mothers, who just like our founder, Mary Sumner, want to support all family life.

Seminar

The day flowed from an inspiring service where thirteen members were commissioned for three years of service as our Executive; to a short and productive meeting; a delicious lunch, and then some really good fellowship. Catching up with old friends and making some new ones. All in all a very spirit-driven day of sharing the Lord's love.

Our next Diocesan Council meeting will be held on September 9th at Holy Trinity, Cressy and our guest speaker will be Judith Nichols, our Australian Education Officer. Judith will be in Tasmania in September and will be holding a Seminar on September 8th at St Mary's Moonah. So please put September 8th and 9th in your diaries as an opportunity to find out how far the Mothers Union links reach.

Did you know that Mothers Union is represented on the United Nations?

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, put on record his support for the work of Mothers Union in his first address to the House of Lords. So if you think Mothers Union is old-hat or just a group of little old ladies having cups of tea perhaps its time to do some investigation.

From my own personal experience in Sheffield we are continuing to make a difference. We have again been asked to assist in the school holiday activities, so that the kids have somewhere they can go when school's out that is both a fun and safe place to be.

Yes, Mothers Union is alive and active in this Diocese.

And still there is more good news!

Next year our Worldwide President, Trish Heywood, will be visiting our shores on February 7th 2004.

The opportunity to meet our Worldwide President doesn't come all that often so put this date in your dairy and encourage your friends to come along with you. This really is a 'must do' occasion. An 11am Eucharistic service at St Luke's Campbell Town will be followed by lunch at the Town Hall.

If any of this has whetted your appetite and you'd like to find out more, contact Heather Turner on 6491 2727 and find your nearest branch of MU. You will enjoy getting involved and helping others!
