The Cathedral and Synod

 

 

Of particular significance for the Cathedral is the presentation of a new Cathedral Ordinance to the forthcoming session of Synod.

There are significant changes in the ordinance from that of the past. Major changes are -

Aims of the Cathedral have been revisited and now reads

a ministry to the State, City and Diocese which is affirming, inclusive and welcoming;

[2]

parish ministry to those who worship at the Cathedral

[3]

worship revolving around the celebration of the Eucharist, with the offices of Morning and Evening prayer said throughout the year;

services of an appropriate nature for diocesan, civic, other significant occasions and for special interest community groups.

[5]

ministry to all sections of the Hobart community, including the residents of and those who work within the inner City of Hobart.

[6]

to encourage through the St David's Cathedral Foundation and for St David's Cathedral public support of the historically significant Cathedral building.

a place open for private devotion, calm and inspiration;

[8]

a platform for the expression and exploration of the Christian faith;

[9]

opportunities to bring Christian perspectives to matters of social concern by offering a forum for public debate and discussion;

[10]

caring services for the relief of those who are in special need and potentially the seriously disadvantaged;

[11]

opportunities to promote and further Christian unity, and ecumenical inter-faith activities.

The Cathedral Chapter changes its structure and role. It will be the governing body of the Cathedral in many ways replacing a Cathedral Council.

The Chapter shall consist of the Dean, two clerical Canons of the Cathedral appointed by the Bishop and eight Lay Canons, two of whom will be appointed by the Bishop, two of whom will be appointed by the Dean, and four elected by and from electors of the Cathedral parish at a meeting convened by the Dean for that purpose.

The appointment of the Dean

The Bishop will appoint the Dean in accordance with the procedure set out in this Ordinance.

The Bishop will appoint 3 persons and the Chapter will appoint 3 persons who will form a Selection Committee that the Bishop will chair.

The purpose of the Selection Committee is to recommend a suitable person to the Bishop for appointment as Dean of the Cathedral.

The Selection Committee will be called to meet by the Bishop and will decide its own meeting procedures and processes.

Should the person recommended by the Committee not be acceptable to the Bishop the Committee will reconvene and deliberate further and then recommend another person to the Bishop for appointment as the Dean.

Should the second person recommended by the Committee be rejected by the Bishop, the Bishop may proceed to make his own appointment to the position of Dean

Any particular questions on the proposal can be sent to the Dean who will forward them to members of the drafting committee for a response should that be necessary.
