Email lists

There are such things as email lists. These enable people with mutual interests to share thoughts and feelings and to explore common issues. All participants send emails to a common address and then they are sent out to all who belong to that list. Some lists are moderated which means that the answers will be vetted by the list owner before being posted. Most lists only allow members to post.

If you belong to a list, remember it is like addressing a meeting, not having a private conversation. You may be responding to something an individual said but everyone else will receive it. If you want to speak in private you should use their private address rather than the list address.

When using a list keep these things in mind:
  • Keep your comments short and when replying you only need to keep the part of the posting you are replying to in the text.
  • Make sure the Subject is relevant to the conversation. Some people like to decide whether to read the email or not based on what the subject says.
  • Above all, be polite. People do not join or stay on lists to be abused.
  • Treat every post as if it is a headline in the newspaper. Lists are public forums.

Lists are fun and can be an opportunity to not only learn and share but to make new friends. Enjoy them, but be mindful of what you are doing.
