In December, an ecumenical service was held to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the visit of French explorer Nicholas Baudin to King Island. Baudin's expedition in the vessel Le Gèographe, gives the earliest known drawings of King Island, and was famous for supplying the gunpowder for the British who claimed the island. The theme of the Commemoration Service was 'Recognising the past, celebrating the present, hope for the future.' The service led by the Rev. Richard Minol, was held at Naracoopa on the Island's East coast, in front of the cairn commemorating the event. Artistic interpretationThe songs for the service were in French and English. The service concluded with a piece of music, written and played on the saxophone by Michael Strickland, a member of the Catholic Church, and Island Christian Youth. The dove in the foreground of the service was made by a Stephen Sowiak, who is also a member of the King Island parish. The work was done by students and staff of the King Island School, with members of the community carrying the display from the service down the main street of Naracoopa to the Fire Station for afternoon tea.
