They came from everywhere - men and women, children, dogs, runners, walkers, all ready to join in and have a good time. The weather was perfect - fine in spite of heavy rain in all surrounding areas, but not too hot. Not at first, that is: it began to warm up in the afternoon. About 200 people and a dozen dogs participated in an extremely well-laid-out course through the hopfields and up the hill to the Red Hills Cemetery, where the view was magnificent for those who had the time to stop and admire it. Prizes galoreThe occasion was very well sponsored, especially by local businesses, and there were prizes galore. Winners in each category received an acknowledgment of their efforts, and there were spot prizes in a draw for all present, including a lovely collection of blue cloth hats for the children. |
The Women's 10k and Men's 10k winners were Kylie Risk and James Scarr respectively. Age was no barrier to a great day, with the veteran's event going to Stan Harrex followed by recent quadruple bypass patient Bruce Campbell. The youngest competitor was Nicholas Langford. There was a section for walkers, the winner being Dorothy McCartney. After the run refreshments were on hand, supplied by a large army of volunteers who donated in both goods and kind. The eats were delicious and there was plenty for all. Hundred and one detailsProceeds were shared between the two Derwent Valley Parishes - Anglican and Roman Catholic. Such a large undertaking required an extensive planning campaign, and each denomination made an appreciable contribution to organisation, mapping and marking the course, and all the hundred and one details needed. The attendance of the Fire Brigade, Lions Club, Police and Ambulance was appreciated, as was the patronage of our local politicians. The whole effort was a great success and a tribute to the
work and co-operation of all concerned. We hope to continue
this in future years. |
