Spam

Unwanted or unsolicited email is called spam. The more active you are online, the more Spam you will receive.

Routinely, I receive offers to enlarge my breasts or other parts of my body, get a platinum credit card, consolidate my debts, buy a cheap car, lose weight (how did they know?), collect a prize, see Britney Spears naked etc.

Your name and email address are hot property and companies harvest these and sell them for marketing purposes.

This is the Readers Digest of the 21st century. Your name can be harvested in many ways.

Some sites record your visit and some times you sign up onto a list or complete a survey. Another way is through the forwarding of jokes etc. to others. One mail I received gave me a list of around 56 new names and addresses. Remove the preceding before you forward material and put multiple recipients in the BCC so others cannot see them.

Finally, most tell you to go to a particular place to unsubscribe. Don't.

This will verify the accuracy of the address and it will then be considered double gold. You are best to set filters to send the mail straight to the trash.
