New sign says it all

When the doors were opened for the 97th year of St Paul's Glenorchy dining room at the Royal Hobart Show, staff were pleased to see a new sign had been erected advertising the dining room.

COME INSIDE NOW FOR FINE FOOD, NON STOP FUN, ENTERTAINMENT and DINING SEATING.

Fine food has been a tradition of St Paul's dining room, which with the exception of one year, has provided a dining facility for workers and patrons of the annual show since the showgrounds were established in Glenorchy in 1904. Firstly a canvas tent hand sewn by a parishioner, then a timber framed pavilion that saw several upgrades, to the now carpeted dining room, but still referred to as the Show Tent. The long term of service was acknowledged this year with the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to St Paul's by the Royal Hobart Show Society.

Non stop fun?

Yes, certainly for the 80 parishioners, whose duties include cooking, sandwich making, peeling potatoes, serving, waiting tables, washing up and selling tickets. A core group of 12 starts at 6.30 am each day to prepare breakfast for the show workers and fanners. It is fun also for the regular patrons who return year after year for meals and to catch up with people who have become friends through the association with the dining room,

Dining seating? Yes, a place to sit down out of the crowds and dust of the showground is very welcome. But entertainment? Did the sign writer expect singers and dancers? We decided maybe he has eaten in the dining room and has been entertained enough by the warm welcome and the laughter coming from the kitchen. We hope so.
