'A Mars a day' - for just $90, to help street kids in the Philippines. Canon Robert Legg with successful bidder Jennie Norrish

This Calvary is the centrepiece of the Monastery Garden dedicated to the memory of Fr Bill Paton.

What do smoke, a Mars bar, soil and singing have in common?

from David O'Neill

They're all part of Festival Time at All Saints South Hobart!

The last four weeks of the Church's year begin with the Feast of All Saints and culminate in the Feast of Christ the King. At All Saints we follow this Season of the Kingdom.

The ball began to roll at the High Mass on All Saints Sunday 3 November, where the visiting preacher was the Vicar General, Canon Robert Legg. Canon Legg spent much of his early years as a member of the parish and particularly as a server. He remains a much loved part of the journey of the people. His influence in the parish has obviously not waned over the years: only he could Dutch Auction a Mars Bar for $90. René Knapp, Sacristan and Church Warden at All Saints, will work with street kids in the Philippines over the Christmas break and this impromptu auction was added to money that has been raised through the parish to support his work.

On the Sunday evening a large congregation commemorated All Souls with a very moving Solemn Requiem Mass remembering those no longer with us who were significant in the lives of the parish and individuals. Gabriel Fauré's Requiem was performed in its liturgical setting by the Collegiate Singers directed by Anne Morgan, accompanied on the organ by Fr David O'Neill.

Monastery Garden

On Sunday 17 November Bishop Phillip Newell visited the parish for Confirmation and for the blessing of two sections of the gardens at the rear of the church.

The parable of the talents (the Gospel for the day) was acted out when Sophie Allan, a member of the choir, and Susan Nuroo, an altar server, were confirmed; then as Chris, Susan's brother, and server Toby Grant were admitted to Holy Communion; and when we moved into the Monastery Garden and were surrounded by its beauty.

Community building

The whole project has been co-ordinated by Yvonne O'Neill who has not only 'cracked the whip' but also done a tremendous amount of the physical work. Supported by teams from the Work for the Dole Program from Mission Australia, professional contractors and parishioners, this project has been the most wonderful exercise in community building. The plaques and the Calvary, that provide the centrepiece for the Monastery Garden, were crafted by Pru Quarmby, who has her gallery, Bibiani Studios, on site.

While the garden will enhance the spiritual life of the parish, especially its activities in Spirituality for 2003, it is a gift to the people of South Hobart. It is the parish's hope that people from the community, including Vaucluse Gardens and Lodge, will take it into their hearts and find space and peace here.

We look forward to its official opening around Easter.
