Cathedral news

From the St David's Cathedral Parish Magazine in 1907:

On Sunday October 20th, the Dean, in his sermon at Evensong, gave an account of Bishop Montgomery's scheme for the Pan-Anglican Congress to meet in London in June, 1908. A great Congress of representative churchmen from every Diocese in the Anglican Communion to discuss the present position, opportunities, and problems awaiting solution by the Church in the five Continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australasia, to be preceded by a great service of Intercession in Westminster Abbey, and concluded by a great Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral. This was in brief an outline of the scheme. The Dean also mentioned the Thank-offering proposed to be made at St. Paul's for the whole Anglican Communion, and invited his hearers to take part in the offering of £100 from the Diocese of Tasmania as its share in the Thankoffering. This £100 will be devoted to the fund being raised by the Bishop of Perth for the formation of a new Diocese in North-West Australia. For this purpose £10,000 is required, £5,000 of which is in hand.

...and in 2002:

On 20 October 2002 St David's Cathedral again saw a gathering of 500 people on an international theme, this time united in a service of mourning for the victims of the Bali bombing. The Cathedral plays an important part in the life of our city and our state. It is not only regular churchgoers who look to the church as a place of comfort and solace, as they try to find meaning in times of need and crisis.

Visitors are always welcome in St David's - not just to attend one of the daily services. The Cathedral offers a quiet place to sit and pray and reflect, and clergy are available for counselling or discussion, through the Cathedral Office. The Cathedral Museum has much of historical interest, and the Combined Charities Christmas Shop is set up in the Cloisters.

St David's is a place of worship, a place of remembering, and a place to serve the needs of others in the name of Christ through prayer, listening, support and practical help.

When you are in the city make a point of visiting the Cathedral. You will feel very welcome.
