The Mothers Union branch at St John's New Town was inaugurated in 1902 and recently held a celebration to mark 100 years. In the early days meetings would often start with the singing of a hymn, and sometimes a piano solo, humorous reading or recitation of a poem would be included in the meeting. The importance of marriage, home life and prayer life was imparted to earlier members and over the years the branch's activities have included collecting and making clothing for babies and for children's homes. HighlightsThe St Bede's branch combined with the St John's branch in 1973. Two longstanding and still active members of the Mothers Union are Mrs Skeels (joined 1967) and Mrs Kurzyp (1969). Other highlights have been the donation of gifts to children at Clarendon, supplying afternoon tea to the ladies at Glenview and at St John's Park. Christmas parties have been held at St John's Park. In recent times money donated at the monthly gatherings has purchased Marriage and Baptism kits for the parish. For 12 years Scripture was taught by members at New Town Primary School and the cake stall at the Church Fair was until this year run by the Mothers Union. |
