Caption competition

Caption, n.: a short title or heading; an explanation on an illustration. Oxford English Minidictionary

And the winner is . . . !

Richard Lord from Bay West with this one:

  • Anglican Church Police book yet another couple for dancing in the aisles.

Congratulations, Richard... You get the cathedral teatowel!

Here's a selection of other entries.
  • I'm wearing my wedding slippers, hope you don't mind, but my feet are killing me! - Meg Kenny, Parish of Latrobe
  • 'And no, your honour, we won't do it again.' - Helen Lord, BayWest
  • 'How beautiful are thy feet with shoes.' Song of Solomon 7:1 - Janice Roberts, Holy Trinity Hobart

The following are not exactly captions, but we enjoyed them so much we print them in full.

Splashing Out

In a ministry in its infancy in this Diocese, trainee Water-Walkers pledge themselves to follow in Jesus' footsteps. Revd Ross Flint presides at the Commissioning wearing his FlotationBoots, here seen fully inflated, ready to accompany the new recruits on their first official outing on the River Tamar.

The Water-Walkers are justifiably proud of their smart turn-out and state-of-the-art equipment. 'Without the support of the New Areas Ministry Fund our parish could not have even considered taking the plunge,' said Revd Ross, who also stressed the need for expert assistance with safety and navigational equipment.

Our photograph reveals only a glimpse of the complexities of water-walking. The recruits are being presented with marine maps and compasses, while the elegant pull-cords which deploy Ross's life-jacket and emergency beacon are clearly visible. As the Archdeacon remarked in his sermon, 'It's a miracle that Jesus managed to do all this considering the rudimentary Roman technology of his day.'

FlotationBoots come in all seasonal colours and may be ordered through the Anglican Bookroom. Please specify size and fitting.

Kippers and slippers

Kippers, kippers, I've always loved kippers!
almost as much as my new pair of slippers.

Snoozing at home, I woke with a lurch,
in ten minutes time, I was due at the church.

A wedding to take, two people to marry
to be late is a sin, I'd better not tarry.

I raced to the front, and gave them a smile,
I bet I don't live this one down for a while.

Ross Chopping, Glenorchy

Editor's Note: Usual disclaimers apply - judges' decision is final, no correspondence will be entered into, etc!

We warmly thank Judy Flint for this photo of her husband Ross officiating at a wedding. The 'satin slippers' are the special bridal cushions - Ross is standing behind them!

Thank you to everyone who sent a caption. We received some very creative entries and our panel of experts had a difficult time choosing the best one. Thank you, too, to the Dean of the Cathedral for donating a prize. There will be another Caption Competition soon - 'interesting' photos are welcome. If you have a suitable photo you could send it [with a SAE for safe return] to the Tasmanian Anglican.
