We have a greater and nobler opportunity that was ever yet offered to any nation, and with the opportunity a duty is cast on us to use it wisely, thankfully, and to the glory of God, who is the giver of all good things. For the first time in the world's history a great nation has the opportunity of building a capital aided by all the resources and inventions of a scientific age and it is our bounden duty so to build our city as to show that we are thankful for the great occasion that has thus been vouchsafed to us. If it is true that whatever task is set before us we are bound to do it heartily 'as unto the Lord and not as unto men,' it was never more true than it is in the case of the building of our Federal City. It is a duty that is cast upon us one and all as citizens of the great Commonwealth of Australia so to build our Federal Cityæ-our national Jerusalemæthat the work when accomplished shall redound to the glory of God, and that our posterity may be able to say with sincerity that our Jerusalem is indeed the joy of the whole earth. ...and in 2002:We regret that the garden party at Bishopscourt, advertised last month is to be deferred until next year and we apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience this may cause. However, an alternative special event will be a visit from Morna Sturrock, who together with Lesley Uren, has recently completed the new set of beautifully embroidered altar frontals used in the Cathedral. Morna was a co-founder of the Embroiderers' Guild of Victoria after studying at the Royal School of Needlework in London and will be in Hobart in conjunction with the Pugin Exhibition at the Art Gallery and Museum. Morna has kindly agreed to give a public lecture entitled 'Symbol and Embroidery in Sacred Space' in the Cathedral at 3 p.m. on Saturday 26 October. We invite all interested in this topic to join members of the Embroiderers' Guild and the Friends of St David's for an informative and entertaining afternoon. A $5 entry fee includes afternoon tea and proceeds will benefit the Friends of St David's. |
