Surf's up! Mission Afloat's model surfboards were made in the workshop.

Mission Afloat is underway

by Allister Martin

At the beginning of September, we welcomed our first school group to trial some of our options.

The secondary students from Kingston Christian Community School, spent their first day around the grounds. They worked hard on one of our longboats, planted agapanthus and scraped bench seats. Their support was greatly appreciated.

Great enjoyment

The weather was atrocious on the second day, but the students spent their time profitably in the workshop, making fishing gear and, with great enjoyment, model surfboards out of surfboard foam and coated with fibreglass. They looked superb with stickers cut from the pages of surfing magazines! In between squalls, the tougher students enjoyed a quick swim in a sheltered nook of the beach.

Armed with their own handmade fishing gear, the group headed to Woodbridge and Gordon jetties to try their luck. At Woodbridge they examined some huge stripey trumpeter and weird sea creatures at the Marine Discovery Centre.

Safety

Much is happening behind the scenes and the Board, supported by a keen band of Friends of Mission Afloat are working hard to prepare boats, workshop facilities and the development application for the proposed boatshed and jetty. Volunteers are fulfilling their Safe Ministries requirements and have completed first aid certificates. We are also working through documentation for Marine and Safety Tasmania and Risk Management as we set the scene for safety on the water.
