Music and More is a 2002 project at St John's Church Launceston to build up more links with the community through music and art.

The first of the series in April was a celebration of the 20 years that Gaylene Cohen has given as an organist at St John's. Gaylene has played for each of these concerts, as she will for the last of the series in October.

The St John's church choir has sung in two of the concerts and in August included the 23rd Psalm as set by Howard Goodall for the Vicar of Dibley TV series.

The More of the concert series centres on various attributes of art and this year has included wall hangings by Elizabeth Prall, mosaics by George Prall, and [in August] the work of local artist, Elizabeth Smith, in a marvellous display of 50 years of her art.

Journey in art

Elizabeth is a graduate of London's Slade College, and several of her works featured are from those early years, including Asian Lady and two sculpture portraits.

The works on display seek to portray something of the story of Elizabeth 's journey in art. Elizabeth believes that art has been one of the most prominent ways of recording the history of civilisation, and she would encourage potential artists to develop their gift, especially as Christians.

Some exhibited works are of her early days in Africa, serving with the Church Missionary Society together with her husband, Robin. Some of these were done literally 'on safari' as Elizabeth accompanied her husband on his medical treks.

Final concert

Another Music and More concert is planned for 27 October at 2.30pm when there will be a display of quilts by talented Tiny Kennedy, whose work is on display in notable buildings in Tasmania. This final concert will have an array of musical talent including the Liturgical Dance group associated with St Oswald's Church, and the music and poems of Vicky Riette and Alan Jones.

Over $1000 from this project has been given to local charities including refugee work, Anglicare, and the donations at the October concert will be given to the City Mission. This concert series has been presented by Derek Nichols who now lives in Launceston.
