Series of Bible Studies written by Judith Wallace
About the writer
Judith Wallace was born in Toowoomba, Queensland and grew up in the south-western sheep country, going to boarding school in north west New South Wales. After matriculation she began nursing training but, when illness forced resignation, trained as an English-History teacher, graduating in 1958. Judith traces her faith journey through childhood family prayers. Sunday School, school chapel services and sound bible teaching as a student in Sydney, where she came to personal faith in Jesus Christ. She met husband Tom at Teachers' College, they married in 1959, taught for three years in country high schools before undertaking theological training, ordination and then service in Armidale, Sydney and Perth dioceses.
After the births of their two daughters and a son, in 1967 Judith returned to teaching English and Christian Studies, first in Sydney and then in Perth, where in February 1994 she faced a sudden breast cancer diagnosis with seven months of treatment. Always a writer, Judith kept a diary record of deepest emotions and spiritual "learnings" out of which came three sets of devotional studies, later used in support groups in which Judith worked after recovery and training. In February 2004, now retired in Tasmania, she faced breast cancer recurrence, exactly 10 years after the first, but this time with longer, "tougher" treatment. Again, she kept a diary, wrote more studies, a book of poems "Walking in Trust by Grace" and worked on her quilting - her "sacred therapies". In 2005, recovered and working in support again, Judith having revised the first two sets of studies, has returned to more devotional writing, currently two booklets she calls "pictorial pilgrimages" entitled "The Seven Churches of Revelation" and "Churches Across the Ages" combining on-sight pictures and meditations which she trusts will also prove helpful.
"Lord...teach us to pray... " - Nine studies on the Lord's Prayer
Foreword The idea for these studies came from discussion among Christian friends over dinner one winter evening. Questions were raised about the changes in the traditional wording of the Lord's Prayer. Why "save us from the time of trial..." rather than "lead us not into temptation..."? Was it right to pray that way? Weren't 'trials' a necessary Christian growth experience? Surely God would not be found 'leading' anyone into temptation. How appropriate were the words "deliver us from evil"? What was the purpose of the prayer, a model or set form? Animated discussion left us with many unanswered questions, so the idea of devotional studies to look at such issues as "what WAS Jesus teaching his disciples?" and "How CAN we pray as He intended?" was born.
"Fruits of the Spirit" - Twelve Thematic Bible studies looking at the characteristics of a Christian Life
Foreword These studies, the second of three sets, were first written in 1995 and revised in 2005 by the writer. As the first set of studies on Psalms, this set is "thematic" based on trips - the spiritual "fruits" as in Galations 5:22 and 2 Corinthians 6:6-8. Each "fruit" is highlighted by verses of scripture in the contents by the studies themselves range over Old and New Testaments. Each scriptural study is supplemented by relevant devotional writings. The studies were primarily written for support and parish home groups but have been found helpful also in school contexts. Each study has "for discussion" questions with space for individual response and each concludes with "for meditation" with a picture and contemplative words.
The Seven Churches of Revelation - A pictorial pilgrimage to the Seven Churches of Revelation following in the Steps of St Paul
Foreword In this "sacred pictorial pilgrimage" I hope to share something of our experiences - through pictures and word - in short devotional meditations, all based on the scriptures we read relating to each site. As well as the seven churches mentioned in Revelation, we visited Tarsus, Paul's birthplace - ancient Antioch, where believers were first called "Christians" and where Peter visited and was convinced that the gospel was for Gentiles as well as Jews (Galations 2) Cappadoccia with its amazing underground houses and churches, Lystra, and lastly the tiny island of Patmos where St John wrote the last book in our New Testament. At each site we had prayer together, sharing in the Lord' Supper at many and those occasions were memorable - we felt a sense of "presence" almost as if we were sharing the Lord's Supper with those early Christians who had met there, so often, before us.
As a final meditation I have included our last visit in Turkey to Gallipoli. There we felt the same affinity with those who had gone before us - who had not only fought and died, but, we were sure, had prayed, and most certainly sought God's aid in their time of desperate need. We praise and thank God for all we learned from the many unforgettable experiences he gave us.
Songs in the Spirit - Twelve Thematic Studies in Psalms
Foreword These studies, suitable for individuals or groups, were written first in 1995 and revised by the author in 2005 after a recurrence of the same cancer which originally inspired them. They are "thematic" ie they start with a topic theme, most often arising from personal experiences referred to below. Consideration of a related devotional extract follows, before the study goes on to investigate the truth of the theme in a selected psalm. Each study contains discussion questions with space for written responses with this revised version adding a picture with meditation.
