Media release Sunday 16 December 2007 Two new bishops for Anglican ChurchThe Tasmanian Anglican Church is to appoint two new Assistant Bishops. The Bishops will be ordained at a special service on 26 February at 7pm at St David's Cathedral, Hobart. The new Assistant Bishops will be known as Missioner Bishops, and will work under the direction of the Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, to lead the mission of the Tasmanian Church. They are a part of a fresh direction for the Tasmanian Anglican church, which focuses on new ministry and mission in 21st Century Tasmania. Dr Chris Jones, the CEO of Anglicare Tasmania, is one of the new Bishops. He will be responsible for the oversight and stewardship of the resources for the church's mission. He will carry out this role on a part-time basis and will continue as CEO of Anglicare. Archdeacon Ross Nicholson, the Rector of St John's Launceston, is the other new Bishop. He will be responsible for overseeing some exciting new experimental mission projects beyond the traditional parish structure. These projects include a ministry with the horse-riding community in the Huon, a new families' congregation in Somerset, and a Chaplaincy to the University of Tasmania's Launceston campus. He will carry out this role half-time and continue as Rector of St John's. This new leadership model will also enable Bishop Harrower himself to spend more time in frontline mission. Bishop Harrower said, 'The time has come to reorder the Anglican Church in Tasmania with fresh energy for mission. We are doing this to further our vision of God transforming the life of our Christian communities and all Tasmanians. Transformation involves taking some risks and developing some new models to complement our traditional ministries.' This new direction was approved at a special Synod in November by representatives of Tasmanian Anglican churches. Bishop John Harrower will be available for interview today (Sunday) at 1pm outside St David's Cathedral, Macquarie Street, Hobart. Revd Ross Nicholson may be contacted for interview in Launceston on 0407 916 603. Dr Chris Jones is currently on annual leave. Media Officer - Revd Stephen Carnaby 0417 343 710 |
