Silver Jubilee for Bishop Newell

August 24th is a special day for Saint David's Cathedral, for the City of Hobart and for former Bishop of Tasmania, The Right Reverend Phillip Newell.

With the appointment of the first Bishop of Tasmania, Frances Russell Nixon, on 24th August 1842, old Saint David's Church became a Cathedral and, as a consequence, Hobart Town was declared a City.

One hundred and forty years later, to the very day, 24th August 1982, the Diocese consecrated and enthroned its tenth Bishop, the Right Reverend Phillip Newell, who held office until his retirement in the year 2000. To mark the silver jubilee of Bishop Newell's consecration, the Dean of Hobart, the Very Reverend Dr Lindsay Stoddart, has invited him to preach in Saint David's Cathedral at the 10.00am Service on Sunday 19th August.

At 5pm on Friday, 24th August Bishop Newell will preside at his "Silver Jubilee Anniversary Eucharist" His son, Canon Theologian of St David's Cathedral Associate Professor, the Reverend Dr Christopher Newell will act as deacon. The Dean will preach.

Bishop Newell says he is very much looking forward to this special service. "It was both a great privilege and responsibility to have served as Bishop of Tasmania for eighteen years. I hope that many who were with me on that occasion twenty five years ago will be able to share the day with my wife Merle and me." He added: "We have lived in four States of Australia, but Tasmania is the place we love to call home. So we chose to stay here after retirement."

The Dean extends a warm welcome to all who would care to attend the Service, which he says will be remembering also the City of Hobart, the Lord Mayor and Council member, as well as the foundation of the Anglican Church of Tasmania.
