Cathedral launches Restoration Appeal

The Cathedral Church of St David in Hobart will tomorrow (Thursday) launch a Restoration Appeal.

Appeal Chairman, Mr Andrew Kemp, and Dean of the Cathedral, Dr Lindsay Stoddart, will speak at the launch which is at the Cathedral, Murray St, Hobart, at 11am. Media representatives are welcome to attend.

Dean Stoddart said, "We are seeking over $4million dollars and many of Hobart's citizens will want to see their Cathedral fully restored. It is Australia's most beautiful Cathedral and the second oldest after St Andrew's in Sydney. I love it and look forward to the pilgrimage we are starting today."

A full Conservation Management Plan will be filed with the Heritage Commission and the Hobart City Council within a matter of days. Heritage Architect Paul Davies applauds the design and significance of St David's saying, "St David's Cathedral is one of the most 'perfect' cathedral designs in Australia in terms of its proportion, scale, detail and layout and retains an exceptional setting within the city."

The Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower OAM, also supports this appeal. Bishop Harrower said, "The Diocese of Hobart celebrates its 165th birthday this month together with the City of Hobart. This is the perfect time for the Cathedral, the city's magnificent Christian home for numerous civic and Christian gatherings, to launch its Restoration Appeal."
