Holy Trinity Anglican Church North Hobart - Property Assessment Report

A property assessment report examining the viability of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in North Hobart and associated properties has found nearly $6 million is required to restore and properly maintain the sites.

Prepared by Architectural Heritage Consultant, Paul Davies, the report highlights that it is unrealistic for the Holy Trinity Parish, which is dependent on support from the local parishioners, to continue maintaining all the properties.

The properties include the Holy Trinity Church in North Hobart, St Margarets Church in Federal Street and a hall adjacent to Holy Trinity.

A meeting of the Parish Council was held on Friday night to receive the report, while parishioners were given an update earlier today.

The Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower said the report provides a series of options with regard to the future of these sites and includes the option to close Holy Trinity and St Margarets.

'It is now up to the parish to digest the findings and decide how they wish to proceed,' Bishop Harrower said.

'We recognise that these buildings are more than just bricks and mortar - they are the places where many people's significant spiritual life-events have taken place. However, it is unrealistic to not also consider matters such as financial viability.'

Bishop Harrower said the church is ultimately not about the buildings in which people meet, but the people who meet and worship God there.

'Like all institutions, time and tide changes and unfortunately it would appear unrealistic for the Anglican Church in Tasmania to retain all its built assets.

'There comes a time when we must make decisions now, in order to ensure the future viability of our church.'

Bishop Harrower said for the parishioners of Holy Trinity and St Margaret's it would appear that time had now come.

Estimate of works required:

Holy Trinity Site: $5,050,000
Hall, Church Street, North Hobart: $700,000
St Margaret's Church and Hall, Federal Street, North Hobart: $115,000
