Former Archbishop of Sydney in Hobart

The former Archbishop of Sydney, Harry Goodhew, is the guest preacher at the 8am and 10am services at St David's Cathedral Hobart this Sunday May 28.

The Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, in welcoming Archbishop Goodhew said 'Mentor, leader, intelligent, pastor, integrity, wise, disciple of Jesus - thus runs the quest for describing Harry Goodhew: a true bishop. Meet him: listen and learn and live.'

On a Four Corners documentary some time ago the Archbishop admitted he heard three descriptions of Sydney Anglicans: 'arrogant, polarising and aggressive.'

The Dean of Hobart who served on the Archbishop's executive team as Archdeacon of Wollongong sees him as the Archbishop who linked the Diocese more closely to the National Church but affirmed the Diocese's heritage and strong evangelical flavour. To slow down the move by many younger priests from an Anglican liturgy the Archbishop authorised a Sydney Prayer book in contemporary plain language.

The Diocese of Sydney is one of the few growing strongly in the western world and the age of the church attenders closely approximates the make up of the Sydney population in age and gender balance. Most denominations are ageing.

The Dean says 'the Archbishop led us from strength to strength, and I admire his tenacity, wit and genuine care for all people. He is worth hearing.'
