Media release Tuesday 21 February 2006 Melbourne Synod does not elect an ArchbishopThe Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower OAM, has not been elected to Archbishop of Melbourne. The Melbourne Synod, which consists of 800 elected representatives of the Anglican Church, were last night unable to reach consensus, with none of the three nominees able to gain the two-thirds majority needed. The Synod has voted to return to the beginning of the selection process. Bishop Harrower said that he was honoured to have been considered for the position. 'This process is a way in which Anglicans seek God's will in choosing their leaders,' Bishop Harrower said. 'Through this process God has confirmed that we are to continue to serve the Church and community in Tasmania. 'For this reason, I would not accept nomination as part of the next round of the selection process. 'My wife and I are both looking forward to further fulfilling years of life and ministry in this beautiful island State. 'There is still much work to be done here and I am preparing for the challenges to come.' Contact Media Officer - Rev. Stephen Carnaby 0417 343 710 |
