Media release Friday 30 September 2005 Ten Anglicans to be ordainedThe Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, will ordain ten people at St David's Cathedral, Hobart, this Saturday 1 October. Seven will be ordained Priest and three will be ordained as Deacons. Bishop Harrower sees this as another step forward in the life of the Anglican Church in Tasmania. 'I'm excited to be able to commission ten new leaders in our local church communities. It's especially pleasing to see the marvellous variety - different ages, men and women, many professions and backgrounds, from all parts of Tasmania.' The ordinands include a recently retired manager of the state Education Department's ESL program, four teachers (including one who co-founded the Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre), a cold store manager, an Associate Professor at the Australian Maritime College a former industrial chemist (turned bookstore manager), a relief crisis housing worker and a retired nurse manager. They will be involved in a variety of ministries in the south, north and north-west of Tasmania – including more traditional parish ministers, honorary clergy, a children's and families worker, and members of local ministry teams. Some will continue in the workforce alongside their new church roles. Bishop Harrower said, 'I'm delighted to see them all taking up the challenge of serving their church and local community in these new roles. They bring wide life experiences, and will be a valuable part of the local leadership of the Anglican church in Tasmania.' The ordination service begins at 10.30am, Saturday 1 October, at St David's Cathedral, Murray Street, Hobart. Media representatives are welcome to attend. |
