Anglican chaplain appointed for Risdon Prison

The Anglican Church in Tasmania has appointed a new full-time Chaplain to Risdon Prison.

The chaplain, the Reverend Charles Whitton, will begin his role at the end of September. Rev. Whitton has been the Rector of Bellerive for the past six years, and has also been a part-time Chaplain to Prisons for the past 4 years. Rev Whitton received a Bachelor of Social Work, and worked as a social worker for five years, prior to his ordination in 1991.

The Chaplaincy will be jointly funded by the Anglican Church and the State Government. Rev. Whitton's role will be to provide pastoral support to all prisoners and prison staff. He will be working in cooperation with other organisations, as well as volunteers.

The Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, said that the chaplaincy is an extension of long-term voluntary Church work in the Prison. He said, 'I am very pleased that Charles Whitton can take on this important new role in the prison.

'The Anglican Church has been involved in chaplaincy even before its move to Risdon, and now we have committed additional funding and resources to this initiative, which we have been working towards for the past four years. In responding to the invitation of the Department of Justice to appoint a full-time Chaplain, we will be focused on providing services and support both for prisoners and prison staff.'
