Media statement Friday 13 August 2004 Full-time Anglican Chaplain for Risdon PrisonThe Anglican Church in Tasmania will next week be making an appointment to the full-time position of Chaplain to Risdon Prison. The Chaplain will be jointly funded by the Anglican Church and the State Government. The Chaplain's role will be to provide pastoral support to prisoners and prison staff. The Chaplain will be working in cooperation with other organizations, such as the Salvation Army, as well as volunteers. The Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, said that the chaplaincy is an extension of long-term voluntary Church work in the Prison. He said, 'The Anglican Church has been involved in chaplaincy at Risdon for many decades, and now we have committed additional funding and resources to this initiative, which we have been working towards for the past four years.' 'In responding to the invitation of the Department of Justice to appoint a full time Chaplain, we will be focused on providing services and support both for prisoners and prison staff.'
