Church volunteers welcome refugees

The Anglican Parish of St John's, Launceston has been making a difference over the past few years actively welcoming refugee families and helping them settle in to life in Tasmania.

So far, they have assisted with the resettlement of 16 refugee families from various African countries.

They help in a wide variety of ways, from negotiating with Centrelink on behalf of families, to providing warm winter clothes and whitegoods.

The volunteer co-ordinator, Audrey Sifleet, said, 'We are so pleased to be able to help these new Tasmanians settle into our community. It's a great way we can show God's love to them in practical ways.'

The Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, yesterday spoke to Synod about his concern for refugees and the need for Australia to more readily welcome and provide for people fleeing strife and war afflicting many countries. He said, 'I'm very pleased to see the local church here responding to the needs of refugees and being a part of transforming their lives for the better.'
