Wednesday 17 December 2003 Thanksgiving service for Bishop HeywardA Thanksgiving Service will be held tomorrow for The Right Reverend Oliver Heyward, former Bishop of Bendigo, who died in Melbourne on 15 December. The service will take place at St David's Cathedral, Hobart, at 12:45pm, Thursday December 18th. Bishop Heyward was Tasmanian Rhodes Scholar in 1949. In the period 1956-1974, he served as Rector of the Parishes of Sorell and Richmond, was the Precentor of St David's Cathedral, and the Warden of Christ College at the University of Tasmania. He was Bishop of Bendigo from 1975 to 1991, and Assistant to the Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia from 1992-1995. Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, said that Bishop Heyward was a gentle, gracious and deeply Christian man who would be very much missed from the Australian church. He said, 'Bishop Heyward was very encouraging to myself, and he was wise, godly and prayerful.'
