Clean Start - Fair deal for cleaners campaign20 April 2006 Statement of support from Bishop John HarrowerI have a nightmare - that we will see in Australia a work environment like the United States, with fewer rights for workers and every work contract a matter of negotiation between powerful employers and vulnerable employees. If this happens, we will see more and more Australian families living in poverty even though one or more adults are in paid work. Among the most vulnerable groups will be contract cleaners, which is why I support the /Clean Start - Fair Deal for Cleaners/ campaign by the unions and the community. We will be a less civilised nation if we go the American way of poor working families. And, as with every social change, we will feel the worst effects in Tasmania.
