Bishop asks Anglicans to continue outward focus

2 June 2007

The Bishop of Tasmania, The Right Reverend John Harrower, today addressed the annual Tasmanian Anglican Synod, which is meeting in Launceston this Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd June.

Bishop Harrower gave a wide-ranging speech, in which he called on the church to deepen its involvement in Tasmanian daily life.

Bishop Harrower addressed the issue of the environment. He called on Christians to engage further with environmental issues, and set out some key principles of ethical decision making in this area.

The Synod will also hear today (Saturday) from two specialists in the area of climate change.

Bishop Harrower noted that the Church has started to turn around its aging membership, with results from the latest 5-yearly National Church Life Survey showing good gains in the 20-30 year-old age group.

The annually held Synod includes representatives from each parish and makes decisions on behalf of the Church.
