Robert Legg OAM

Born Manchester, UK and educated in England and Australia, Robert left school (Hutchins) early to pursue a career in banking. Very much enjoyed the work but found that there wasn't enough time for Church (All Saints, South Hobart) and work! Was head server, choir person and C.E.B.S. leader. Membership of Comrades of St George (Australian Board of Missions) introduced him to his wife-to-be, Robin Connolly, and also provided the impetus to apply for priestly training.

Trained for ministry at Christ College, Hobart, under John May and Oliver Heyward - a stretching experience - eventually achieving a Th.L. 'I really didn't go much on study. I was much happier doing part-time parish work. Visiting people on behalf of the Church was never a chore - always a delight. But my studies suffered!'

Ordained Deacon in 1963 by Bishop Cranswick and Priest by Bishop Davies in 1964. Robert has served in the Parishes of Trevallyn, St. James, New Town, Zeehan/Rosebery, Scottsdale and Kingston. 'I have enjoyed each posting. I cannot think of any place in which I was bored or felt that I was not wanted.'

From 1964 until 1998 Robert exercised a specialist ministry on Tasmanian television by producing and presenting 'Thought for the Day', a short 2-3 minute spiritual think-piece on commercial television, sometimes twice a day, mostly late at night. He established a late night statewide 'church and fellowship' for insomniacs, shift workers, the sick and those for whom television was often their only form of companionship and entertainment.

Robert has been a member of Anglican Renewal Ministries Australia since the 70s and has conducted teaching and preaching missions in every State. 'At every opportunity I took parishioners with me. It seemed a wonderful opportunity to share the mission tasks of sharing faith and helping people find new life in the Saviour'. He has also travelled overseas by invitation to preach and minister in the USA, United Kingdom, Singapore and New Zealand.

Robert is keen to see Christians involved in their local communities. He has a cherished role as Chaplain to the Kingborough Council at the invitation of the Mayor. In 1993 the Kingborough Council honoured his work in Kingborough by granting him its Municipality Merit Award. Robert has been a Board Member of Tascare Society for Children since 1972 and was made a Life Member in 1996. He is Chaplain to Clarendon Children's Homes Inc and is a member of the Board and Executive of the Homes. In 1999 Robert was made a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International for his work and service to the Tasmanian Community. Robert is a member of, and honorary Chaplain to the Professional Fishermen's Association of Tasmania.

Robert was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in June 2001 for his services for children.

Robert loves walking, deep sea off-shore sailing, music of all kinds, particularly 'country', and travelling with his wife Robin. Robert loves home, family and his country cottage at Snug.
