John TongueThe Rev'd John Tongue is 46 years old and married to Shirley (a Tasmanian of Lindisfarne extraction), with two children. He was raised on a cattle property near Tamworth in northern NSW and grew up in a Christian family, making a personal commitment when he was 12 or 13 and then re-committing his life to the Lord at the 1979 Billy Graham Crusade in Sydney. He did a Science degree at both Sydney University and the University of WA, followed by a Diploma of Education at UWA. He then taught at an Anglican Girls' School in Tamworth from 1985 to 1989 - Science, Maths, Biology, Physics, Introductory Computer Studies and Outdoor Education. He was involved in various churches in Sydney, Perth and Tamworth during those years. Just in caseWhile teaching in Tamworth, he made some tentative enquiries about overseas mission service, and so entered Ridley College 'just in case'. There he decided God was leading him both to marriage (Shirley was working at Ridley) and to ordained ministry. At the end of studies at Ridley, John and Shirley moved to Boggabri, in the Diocese of Armidale, for one year's Deacon-in-training, followed by four years as Vicar of Boggibilla Parish (right on the Queensland border) and almost five years as Vicar of Tenterfield Parish. During those years, John completed a Master's Degree in Theology, mostly through Moore College in Sydney. At the end of 2002, John took up the position of Rector of Holy Trinity in Hobart, a position he held for four and a half years. During that period, he served for a time as Deputy Vicar-General, as a Canon of St. David's Cathedral, as vice-chairman of CMS Tasmania, and took on the role of Diocesan Spiritual Director for Cursillo in Tasmania. He also helped facilitate the coming together of Holy Trinity and Bay West Parishes. In April 2007, John moved to become Rector of Holy Trinity, Ulverstone, on the North-west Coast. At that time, he relinquished a position on the Cathedral Chapter, and hence as a Canon of the Cathedral, but became a Canon of the Diocese. Most recently, John has become the Chairman of CMS Tasmania, and continues as Diocesan Spiritual Director for Cursillo. David
