Royce ThompsonBorn in Melbourne 31 Oct 1948, he lived in Brighton Beach and attended Haileybury College. He studied, Science, part-time at Monash University and RMIT while working at Defence Standards Laboratories Maribyrnong. At first in the Nuclear Studies Section and later the Atomic Weapons Tests Safety Committee assisting in monitoring of radioactive fallout from the French Tests in the Pacific. Early in the 70's he felt God's call to full time ministry and in 1972 was candidated by the Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne and began theological studies at Ridley College, Melbourne University. Ordained Deacon Feb 1975 and Priest Feb 1976 was appointed Assistant Curate at St John's Bentleigh. On Missionary leave from Melbourne Diocese was appointed, in Feb 1977, Bush Church Aid Missioner to the 100 000 sq mile Parish of Kununurra - Wyndham in North West Australia. In 1978 he graduated from the Missionary Aviation Fellowship Flying School in Ballarat returning to NW Aust. as a Flying Padre he ran an Aircraft Hire business to support the flying ministry. Major concerns were cross cultural ministry to Aboriginals and outreach to isolated towns, stations and hospitals. In Jan 1982 he was commissioned, as a Chaplain, in the Australian Regular Army and assigned to 6 Battalion, Airborne Infantry, in Qld. In Jan 1984 he was posted to the Army Schools of Transport and Catering in Puckapunyal where he was concerned with Character Development and Training. Transferred to the RAAF in Sep 1986 he was posted to RAAF Williamtown NSW. Posted in Jun 1988, to he US Navy Chaplains School, co-located with the US Navy War College, in Newport RI he graduated from the Advanced Chaplains Course Class of 1989 and completed a Masters Degree at Salve Regina University. Returning home via Pasadena, California, he began a Doctor of Ministry. In Oct 1989 he was posted to RAAF East Sale in Victoria. In Mar 1994 he was promoted to Chaplain (Wing Commander) and posted to RAAF Amberley near Brisbane for 1994 and returned to Sale for 1995 and early 1996. On 11 Mar 96 he was promoted to Chaplain (Air Commodore) and the Principal Air Chaplain - Anglican assuming the post of Command Chaplain for Logistic and Training Commands. On the 20 Apr 96 the Anglican Primate appointed him as Archdeacon to the Air Force. From Nov 97 until Oct 02 he was the Director General Chaplaincy Services Air Force in Canberra being responsible for the RAAF Chaplaincy program and the day to day management of the full time and part time Anglican, Roman Catholic and Protestant Clergy. From Oct 02 he has been Principal Air Chaplain - Anglican and is also Chair of Trustees for the RAAF Welfare Trust Fund. In Apr 04 he retired from the Permanent Air Force and moved to the Reserves. In the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn he has been Acting Dean of Goulburn from Dec03 to Jul 04 and Locum at Christ Church Queanbeyan, NSW from Mar 05 to Jul 05. In Jan 05 he was appointed as an Academic Associate of Charles Sturt University working as an Associate Lecturer at St Mark's National Theological Centre in Pastoral theology and supervising in the Master of Ministry program. Married to the former Sue O'Connor, of East Brighton VIC, a Business Studies Graduate of RMIT. They have 3 adult children all in Canberra, Rowan (30rs) an Accountant, Christina (27yrs) a Psychologist and Joanna (25yrs) a National Communications Officer at the CRS Australia. Appointed Acting Dean of St David's Cathedral Hobart from August 2005.
