John Teniswood, AETrained as a secondary teacher, John taught in secondary schools for 10 years at Queenstown, Rose Bay and Huonville, before being seconded to the ABC for three years to work in educational radio and TV. In 1972 he joined the staff of the Hobart Technical College as Lecturer in General Studies and he remained there until he retired in 1994 as Head of the School of General Studies. This left the way open for him to further his studies in theology. While in TAFE, John was instrumental in establishing a course in Religious Studies. When he retired, the course was taken over by the Tasmanian College of Ministries (now Tabor College) and he went with the course. He still teaches part time at Tabor College, where he is also on the Board of Management. For most of his life John followed a family tradition by being active in the Scout movement. He was a leader at Taroona, Queenstown, and Sandy Bay, before being appointed Tasmanian Branch Commissioner for Venturers, a position he held for 14 years. It was under his guidance that girls were first accepted into the Scout Association as Venturers. He was awarded the Silver Acorn and Honorary Life Membership of the association in recognition of 34 years service to youth. After National Service in the Army, John was commissioned in the RAAF Citizen Air Force. He served there for 14 years, most of the time as Training Officer for the Tasmanian University Squadron. He was awarded the Air Efficiency Medal (AE) for this service. He is married to Judy (who was the local Guide leader when they met). They have two adult children, Susan and Andrew. John and Judy live on a large block at Kingston with six dogs, two cats and one galah. John's current hobbies are military collecting and reenactments (he conducts tours of the Kangaroo Bluff Battery each summer) and veteran cars. He owns and drives a 1906 Alldays car, which he says took him 38 years to restore. He also helps Judy and Susan who breed and show St. Bernard dogs. John and his family have worshipped at St Clements, Kingston, for over 30 years. He became a Lay Reader in 1992 and was ordained Deacon in 2001 and Priest in 2002. He is a member of the Tasmanian Council of Churches Ecumenical Spirituality and Theological Education Commission.
